Phalaenopsis 'Violet Queen' AGM
Default Phalaenopsis 'Violet Queen' AGM

I saw this pretty little phal in my mum's local supermarket and couldn't resist buying it. It's compact, so won't take up much space (can you tell I'm running out of excuses) and how often do you see a named (and healthy!) orchid in a supermarket?

I'm struggling to come up with any info on it though. I found a photo of it at this year's London Orchid Show, so I'm guessing it's new - it's not listed on the RHS database yet. Does anyone know its parentage/breeder or anything else about it?

Unfortunately there is no such Phalaenopsis registered under that name.

What the mass market growers will sometimes do is give a cross a commercial name without registering it.

Perhaps you can contact the grower, who's name should be somewhere on the tag, and ask them if they know what parents were used in making the cross. That is your best bet at this point in time.

If they can't provide you with that information there is no way to ID the name of your plant even with a picture. Seeing as there are soooo many hybrids out there that "look like" one other without the parentage there is just no way to positively give it a name other than what you already have.
Good Luck!

It has an RHS award of merit, so it's origin must be known, I just can't find any information about it. The RHS site lists it on their AGM list of orchids, but they just give a physical description of it, nothing about who bred it or the parentage.

You'll note that 'Violet Queen' is in single quotes in the RHS list, while most of the other orchids listed are not. That suggests that it is an unregistered cultivar being commonly sold under that name, which appears to be more common in Europe than it is here.
