Not root, not spike, odd growth

What is it? It does not look like a spike or root. Is it a Kiki? I never seen one sprouting from the main core. Would it be eventually separatable.
Please enlighten me.

I think this is just growing a side shoot. This isn't super common in healthy Phals, but it isn't unheard of. If the crown of the plant is damaged, this is how the plant will continue to grow. It can also happen randomly even when the crown is not damaged, which appears to be the case here. Once it grows roots, you can detach it and pot it separately if you want, but you can also just leave it. Then you will have a bigger plant with two crowns, and therefore twice as many flowers.

I have one that did the exact same thing. It has never developed roots. This particular cultivar flowers very late, so if it's going to flower it should be soon. I did notice, however, that the leaves on this new growth are very brittle. In fact I have broken several.
