Phalaenopsis with basal keiki and yellow leaves
Default Phalaenopsis with basal keiki and yellow leaves

Hello,

I have a phalaenopsis timothy christopher that grew last winter a terminal spike, I had a relief when a saw that she was growing a basal keiki, it is really healthy , but it's still has no roots at all, and the mother is starting to yellow the leaves below the keiki, I've check the root system and it's seems ok, so I suppose that the yellow leaves are a consequence of the terminal spike.

I don't know how to stop the leaves to yellow or stimulate the root growth on the keiki.

Any help will be useful

Thanks

Normal leaf loss, and the plant looks perfectly healthy. The keiki doesn't need to get roots. It owns all the roots now. The leaves of the original crown will gradually die off and the keiki will take over as the new crown. In a few years you won't even be able to see that the mother was ever there.

Really thank you to all of your advises. Now I'm more realiefe knowing than the keiki owns the roots of the mother even if the mother loses all of its leaves. It's the first terminal spike that I have and I was a little worried .

Thanks you.

Wow. I have a NOID phal with a basal keiki as well. The mom is huge, and the baby actually does have at least one root that I can see. I'm chiming in here because I thought that I would have the mom and the baby together in one pot, and that eventually I'd have 2 phals that would bring even more spikes and flowers. I went to great lengths to be sure not to bury the baby under bark when I repotted mom. Do basal keikes always win out over the original plant?

A keiki is a vegetative growth from an unusual place. It is normal for this kind of Phal to produce growths from the base, and make multi-headed plants. These normal growths are not called keikiis. In the case of Phals, the term "keiki" is usually used for growths from the flower stem.

Normally, neither offsets from the base nor keikiis harm the initial rosette.

The original poster's plant produced a flower spike from the center of the rosette. This is called a "terminal spike." When this happens, that rosette is finished growing. The meristem tissue at the apex of the plant formed a flower spike, and there is no meristematic tissue to produce further leaves.

Most of the time, when a Phal makes a terminal spike, a normal new growth forms from the base, and the plant continues to grow. Occasionally the plant does not form a growth from the base, and it will eventually die.
