Phalaenopsis in bloom everywhere
Default Phalaenopsis in bloom everywhere

Hey everyone,
Here in my city it is very common for people to buy phalaenopsis to enjoy their blooms, and give them away afterwards to the people responsible for maintenance of condos/apartment buildings. They then usually mount them on trees and every year around october the phals that spiked during the winter finally start blooming.

I went for a walk this morning and took a few pics, so I thought I would share them here. These orchids get zero maintenance.. only rain water and that's all, but they do put on quite a show.

Hope you enjoy!

Not a phalaenopsis, but these oncidiums are really nice, and not in full bloom yet. Unfortunately I couldn't get a better picture.

I was thinking about this last night (you made a lasting impression). You must get lots of rain in your area? What happens in a drought?
Those are all great Phals. Amazing blooms, the kind that got me into orchids in the first place.

I may have missed it, but what city is that? Seems like a fantastic place if people put the effort into mounting. Most of the time that I've seen, once an orchid goes out of bloom, people toss it in the garbage

Fabulous! Placing the phals in a spot advantageous to their needs and Mother Nature make a great marriage. How smart of the plants past owners to pass along this idea for others to enjoy.

I live in one of the few isolated regions of Brazil outside of the tropical Amazon Basin that receive more than 2,000 mm (79 in) of precipitation annually, so there's no dry season per se. Also, it can get hot in the summer months during heat waves but for the majority of the year temperatures are moderate. The average high year round is 25C (77F) with not a lot of variation.

During our 'winter' it gets drier, but temperatures are much cooler, around 10C to 15C at night and 18C to 24C during the day. Cooler temperatures + high humidity allows the orchids to do well even without rain.

Droughts don't really exist here, but once in a blue moon we do have 2 weeks without any precipitation. Plants suffer but then recover afterwards. This happens once a year, maybe twice in a really dry year. For reference I just checked and the accumulated precipitation for the past 12 months is 94 in, which is more than the average.

I started growing orchids a couple of months ago, but I think I'm in the perfect climate for most of the warm to intermediate growers

I'm in Santos in the state of São Paulo, but this is relatively common in São Paulo and Rio as well, specially in residential areas.
