I myself am a Phal killer. I have killed my share over the years BUT! I bought one over 2 years ago and got it to bloom 2 years in a row so far. It's in a clear pot so I can see the roots to tell if it needs to be watered more easily. I felt brave and bought a mini Phal last fall. It's still alive! LOL!

I think next winter I am going to try a few of my warmer growing ones on a heat mat.

Yes, do it! They love it. It dries out the media much quicker as well, which phals seem to like, especially in the winter.

snowflake311, this is also something I'd recommend for you for the winter now that you've put your phals in S/H. It will keep the root zone warmer.

Well My Phals are doing great now that they are in Semi-Hydro. I have spikes on 2 that have not bloomed in 2 years. I am so happy. All my Phals are in Semi-hydro. Most of my minis live in my shower window now. it is a filtered south facing window and every morning when I shower they get 100% humidity and lots of warm air it is a pretty warm bathroom. They are all doing really well here. I have new roots and leaves.

The S/H has been a life saver for my Phals. My old one were doing so well that I went out and bought a new mini.

Snowflake, I am confused as to why you said you were trying to kill the one plant that you mentioned (now recovering)?

As already stated, I think your indoor growing conditions may just be too cold for Phals. I've no experience with semi-hydroponic growing, so I have no idea if that will help you or not. I think the suggestion to warm your growing space (heat mat or turning up the thermostat) may help. If providing the extra heat is not an option, you may want to consider growing different types of orchids that are cold tolerant (such as Cymbidiums or Odontoglossums).

Can I ask what usually kills your plants? Root rot or loss? Leaf problems (fungal or bacterial rot)? Crown rot?
