What happened to this bloom?

This bloom is about 4 days old now and shows no signs of opening any more. What could possibly be the cause?

I don't know but the bloom looks strange. It looks like a vanda bloom more than a phal one. I guess you will see if the others open funny. I had one bloom normal then had one open on the end after all the others had fallen off and it was a retarded bloom but I have no idea why.

Thanks Shannon, I think I do have a couple more ready to open on that plant. I'll have to see how they look when they do.

It looks as though the lip has transformed into a regular petal. It will be interesting to find out whether this was a one-time fluke, or the plant does this all the time.

We shall see. I've got another bud opening so maybe in a day or so.

In part this could just be from "big lip" Phal breeding where the lip is large and broad and more similar to the petals. But there seems to be a petal or sepal missing on that flower, and some odd ridges and folds like maybe parts are fused. It will be interesting to see the next flowers.

The next bloom is opening this afternoon and it looks normal as it unfolds. I guess it was just a fluke that caused the abnormal one but there are still more buds on the plant.

Sometimes one flower on a spike opens with missing parts. In this case the lip is missing, as it has two petals, two sepals and a third sepal looking like a petal. If other flowers open normally with all parts intact, then this mutated flower is not stable and could be a one time thing. Looks interesting though!

So far it's been a one time thing Leslie as the next flower was normal. Hopefully the rest will be also.
