Keiki born with a bloom
Hi all, this is my very favorite NoID phalaenopsis for many reasons, mostly sentimental. So, I am just so happy that it decided to throw out a keiki this year!
It's my first keiki ever, and I was a little surprised that the keiki came with a flower bud (that's bigger than the baby plant!) I remember reading a post somewhere about another grower who commonly gets keikis in bud and am wondering, why does this happen on some keikis and not others? Does the presence of the bud rob any nutrients from, or otherwise affect the development of the baby plant?

It is a beautiful phal, for sure. Interesting about the bud formation. I think everyone that grows orchids should have a special Noid phal that keeps a spot on their orchid shelf

Very cool!
I have had Dens where an immature keiki blooms - I haven't heard of it in Phals, so I don't know how common it may be ...

Awww! The li'l guy bloomed! I'm attaching a pic of the bloom from the back because it's so cute to see those tiny leaves on a huge flower! Also, a couple of better pics of the papa plant.
Sadly, every one of my phals is a NoID, but most of them were anniversary presents, so they're here to stay! I name all my NoID plants (and all my others, too, if I'm honest), so this one is called Othello.

Oh and ALL our orchids have names - it's much easier to say 'Bob has a new spike' than 'Zygopetalum James Strauss has a new spike'

Haha. Can't imagine an orchid named Bob. What could a Bob be? A Bulbophillum?

Actually, Bob is a Zygopetalum We also have Bobette, she is Bob's friend the Psychopsis
Then we bought Bratonia Shelob, she naturally stayed Shelob, but we did add Bilbo (this is a Bulbophyllum actually), Nazgul (Maxillaria schunkeana, she's black, Nazguls are black)......nobody judge
