If you could only have one phal.....
Which would it be? Preferably one I can get at Big Leaf Orchids...I have a gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket and I want this to be a special one as it is celebrating my 40th birthday!

At Big Leaf, I would tell Peter Lin my interests and let him surprise me.

Hmm.. all my phals from him are my favorite but I absolutely love the Samera but I think I like my Joshua Irwin Ginsberg x speciosa the best!! It has almost iridescent purple flowers and has a basal keiki coming along nicely and Shiny foliage, it is a showstopper!

I would get the speciosa x maculata cross just because it's rare. They're just seedling now though, so not sure what the flowers will look like.

Since Peter was just in Taiwan, you may want to shoot him an email and see what he might have coming in the near future. Additionally if you give him some general info like what colors you prefer, with or without markings or a blush like in bellina, are you looking for something that would stay small, or perhaps you want a species.
If you give him a good starting point I'm sure he'll come up with some great recommendations, he has for me in the past.
Make sure you let us know what you decide on!

The speciosa x maculata cross is on my wish list. I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm a little hesitant about Samera bc I have killed every single violacea cross or species I've ever had. I do like the idea of bright bright bright!
Great plan to email Peter. He has never steered me wrong.

If I could have only one phal, the one I'd like to have is the one I have now...I have a lot of affection for it, even if it's not the most spectacular.

Well, Peter got back to me and I couldn't limit myself to just one plant. Pictures to come when they arrive.
1. Phal Rare Vintage "Patrick" AM/AOS (a Sweet Memory x George Vasquez hybrid....can't wait)
2. OX1637 Phal OX Sunkist 'OX1637' (Surf Song x Yu Pin Fireworks)
3. Phal Serene Chan Guat Hwa (Princess Kaiulani x Dragon Tree Eagle 'DT #1' AM/AOS)
4. Phal speciosa 'Blue' x maculata 'Orange' (F1243s)
I'm really excited to see the primary hybrid bloom but that will be a wait. The first two are in flower now. Whee!
