I noticed these spots last week when I was watering. The underside of the leaves were oozing a clear liquid at the spots. Is this a fungus, bacterial infection?? Could it come from water drops standing on the leaves too long? It doesn't appear to be spreading, or getting worse. Thanks
Looks like rot to me. I would sprinkle with cinnamon or spray with Listerine (which is it Susanne? ) or, in my preference, I would drench the root zone with Thiomyl, systemic fungicide. I have been known to (a couple times) cut the leaf off to prevent spread, but that's like cutting off your hand to "cure" a hangnail. A bit drastic.
Terri sounds to me with the oozzing that there is a good chance of this being phalspot bacteria.
Where you had ooze was it a blister formation? have a rank odor? if so I recommend daubing on a bit of whatever antibiotic salve you have in the medicine cabinet that contains bacitracin.
Cheryl I didn't notice any odor and if it had a blister it had already burst before I saw it. I was a little preoccupied with "OMG what the hell is that!!". I have some neosporin type stuff in the bathroom. I'll dab a little of that on and see if it helps. Any idea what causes this so I can avoid it in the future?
Ross this is just a baby so I really don't want to cut anything off if I don't have to!
Hi Eleanor. The plant is doing fine. I didn't do anything to the leaves I just left them alone but kept an eye on them. The blisters eventually dried up leaving a hard spot on the leaf but didn't seem to have any adverse effect on the plant. It bloomed last spring and is in spike again. It seems as the plant has gotten bigger it hasn't had as much of a problem with the blisters though it occasionally still gets one.
