Default Balloon leaf

I have a nice Phal. Surf Song that has been blooming for months, it is now putting out a new leaf. The problem is that it looks really deformed! It looks like a little balloon!! It is about an inch tall and about as big around as a nickel!! There is a line on one side but no other markings at all and no sign of it 'breaking open' or anything like that. I have never seen any thing like it! Any ideas what would cause something like this? The plant looks super healthy, it is just soooo weird looking.
Sorry no pics....Jean

Hard to say without a pic ... I have seen photos of Phals growing a "tubular" leaf, which apparently seems to be a bit odd, but otherwise fine. Not sure if yours is doing this, or something different.

Yes, Loves Phals.I got mine from Hausermans! Well now, that is interesting. Wondering what was done to cause this, it must have been something they did. Do you have a camera so you could send them a pic or two? Would be interesting to hear what they have to say. ...Jean

Yes, I do have a camera... I guess you don't? I am going to wait until mine grows a little bit more and maybe ask... especially since yours is doing the same thing! It is sad to see the leaf so odd b/c otherwise I have a beautiful healthy plant I was really hoping it wasn't a terminal spike but now it looks like just a deformed leaf.

I don't know the cause, sorry. Since two of you have the same hybrid, from the same vendor, doing the same thing , genetic perhaps ... ?

Loves Phals, my plant was beautiful also but now I am worried that this will spoil the whole thing! Will this continue with the next leaves or will the next one be normal? Only time will tell I guess.

White Rabbit, It could be genetic or maybe some kind of growth hormone maybe? No clue...Jean

Genetics, some pollution, phytotoxicity, virus, severe issues of culture (pests, fert)…

Without pics it's difficult to tell.

Ok, I did get some pictures of my plant with the messed up leaves. It looks like there is an outer leaf that is very curled and deformed (and looks swollen) and a second one inside this one. There is an opening now. Otherwise the roots weren't great when I got it and I potted down and it is growing many new roots and healthy otherwise! Any thoughts welcome!
