Question Phal. maculata growth

Bought a small plant at recent show, blooming. Spike is still green and more buds are present. But is it normal for a new leaf to be growing as well as new roots all at the same time? This hobby of mine keeps me scratching my head constantly!

No worries. You should be glad you have a healthy plant. The plant gives the spike enough energy to produce blooms then that's it! Next, the plant will form new leaves and roots to gather enough energy to give to the next spike. Most hybrids flower two to three times a year=maybe four.
Your plant is a primary hybrid and will exhibit a characteristic of its kind.

Congratulations the maculata is a wonderful species. It is perfectly natural for many Phals to grow roots, leaves and bloom at the same time.

Don't cut the maculata spike, they rebloom from the same spike for years.

Brooke...is your plant mounted? Mine is in bark so for now I'll let it be. And Bud...you have the perfect name for horticulture!
