Got this in the mail in late May from bigleaforchids.com. I use LECA, but haven't repotted any of the three phals I got from Peter Lin because they were all sent in spike and I don't want to mess that up. When this guy opened up the other day, I was thrilled. I didn't really know what to expect, and yelled about it when I saw it because I was impressed. It's a really cool looking flower. So hefty.

In sun.

In shade.

In profile.

Whole plant.

I really hope I can keep this one happy! I love it!

This has been producing a fragrance for several days. Unfortunately, I am pretty sensitive to smells, and for some reason this one makes my shoulders tighten and yesterday started to make me feel nauseated. I actually love scents, and many don't bother me, but the ones that do *really* do, and this one is one of those. I don't really like the scent, but I don't dislike it either. It has top-notes of citrus and it's a bit "floral," but it has a heavy base note that I don't care for. I wouldn't mind having the smell in the house because it doesn't bother my nose, it's just that my body doesn't like it. It has to go.

So my misfortune is your opportunity! I'll be posting this in the classifieds!

It has a double dose of amboinensis in it so that is probably where the unpleasant smell is coming from. Too bad, it's a pretty flower.

Thanks for the info! It really is a stunning flower, and if the scent didn't provoke a physical reaction, I'd keep it! It's not as if my house only has smells in it that are pleasant. The flower smells much better than my dog or the cat litter pan but I don't have a physical reaction to either of the latter smells (lucky for them!).

My wife hadn't noticed any smell at all and was surprised when I told her I'd had to put it in the basement.

It's helpful to know that I should personally avoid amboinensis and its hybrids, so thanks for that. Disappointing for me, because I adore the way the flowers look. Oh well. #firstworldproblems

Thanks! Had my wife smell it yesterday and she shrugged and said, "It smells like a plant. It's weird that it bothers you."

So I guess it's just me!
