Default Peloric Phals

Has anyone come across a truly peloric phal at a local supermarket or home improvement store? I just bought a peloric mini phal from Trader Joe's. I usually don't buy NoIDs, but I couldn't resist the temptation.

I came across a white one in Raleys recently. It didn't strike my fancy, but it was unusual.

It's more difficult to select a hybrid variety with rounded and broadly flattened flowers. I think this kind of peloric flowers are treated as defects, so they are not put into mass production.

I understand that such peloric orchids possess undesirable characteristics and are thus not mass produced. There are occasionally 'hiccups' in the hybridizing process that result in such peloric orchids, and I was asking if anyone has come across one.

I notice that you're in Taiwan. I'm also Taiwanese.

I do see peloric at TJ and HD, but not very often at all, like once or twice a year I would say.

I don't like the look of them. They just don't look like phals. lol
Yours look quite cute, mainly the coloring I guess.

I have a mini phal (magenta colored) from TJ. It was the "normal" one. Then the second blooming opened up half peloric and half normal.
It is not in bloom again. Lots and lots of buds, but only three opened. Two peloric and one normal.

How strange!!!

Do you use Superthrive? I've read some posts on OB where the peloric characteristic is due to use of hormones. All the blooms on my mini phal exhibit the same traits, so I assume it's safe to say that it's truly peloric.

I've seen some pictures of strange-looking peloric phals, but I like how mine maintains symmetry.

I don't use superthrive although I am aware that using the product at wrong time can cause funny things on flowers.

I don't believe superthrive or hormones are the cause of peloric, though.

It is just random mutation on the genes responsible for development of petals and sepals.
Are hormone use the cause of this mutation? I don't know for sure.

Mine is a good example, because it came normal and the subsequent blooms are pelric, and I never used hormones or superthrive on this plant.

I believe unstable genes on this particular plant, unless perhaps there's some crazy virus playing with the genes randomly. haha

Whatever the cause, pelorics are not even considered for entering awards I heard.

Some people do like pelorics, so there are still sold but at very limited amount.

I really am not a fan, but my little sold magenta phal is an exception. It was bought as normal and was like $5. and I love the color, so I keep it.

With that said, again, I like yours for some reason. The dark pattern against white and the overall shape just blend well together. strange good, isn't it? haha

I found my first peloric at WalMart this winter. I think they are kind of neat. All my flowers on that plant are peloric. I have 2 or three baby phals that are supposed to carry the gene for peloric. If they ever bloom, we shall see.
