Cold damage - minimizing impact
Default Cold damage - minimizing impact

I'm in northern Illinois and like most others, have experienced a cold snap with temps in the negatives. I've had plants in window sills for a few years with no problem in previous winters but I just went to check on them after a few months (yes I know, bad me, they're a little dehydrated but they are otherwise fine) and one has cold damage. It's a smaller Phal but not a mini (lost the card and can't recall what it is). The largest leaf was in bad shape so I removed it, two others are fine and a small baby leaf has black spots around the edge.

I've never had to deal with this before and I did some research and it sounds like I need to avoid putting it in warm temperatures right away. It's been in that window all winter. I moved it away but it is now in the 70 degree area of the rest of the house. I was going to bring it to work, same temps. Any concerns with this move? Air is dry as can be so that's not a concern. Roots are fine as it hasn't been watered in quite some time.

Meanwhile my Den is going nuts with new growth. Funny how different they can be.

Dens can be cool, even cold growers, so it's not a mystery.

Phals are mostly hot growers, so for most, cold or ever cool are bad moves.

Once it's sanitized, keep it warm (higher than 23°C if possible), with some air move and enough light. In fact it'll need a quiet growing environment for some time.

On moving between hot and cold the issue is more coming from hot (high activity, actively pumping water) and going to cold (next to no activity, water in excess), you risk then edemas, and plants support cold better if on the dry side. The opposite direction is ok.
