Easy and unexpensive way how to mount Phals

I have many of my phals mounted, growing outside in Florida year round. Many are on wood or tree fern, but when I was in Lowes in summer, I saw these very cheap birds feeders, only $1.99, and I got great idea. Took few home, filled one with sphagnum and mounted one of the Phals on it. This was back in July, and I must say, Phal likes it very very much, there is bunch of the new roots that are growing all through and attaching to the mount. This is very effective and inexpensive way how to mount. Due to the great air circulation the sphagnum works well for them, otherwise I would not recommend sphagnum for Phals in Florida!

Thanks guys, I like inexpensive ways how to do the things:-) I have more feeders, still planning some other projects with them, wanna use one for mini's and display them on one together somehow:-)

Welcome Nikkik, I was testing it to see how it will work, so far this phals looks much happier than all other phals I mounted at the same time, the second happiest is on the tree fern slab, but I can highly recommend feeder, so cheap, comes with the chain and the hook already, so just add moss and you are all set! I guess that thanks to great air circulation the phal roots really enjoy this!

Very nice if you can keep the sphagnum moist. I'm sure you could fill it with orchid bark and all sorts of other media.

Tindomul, sphagnum keeps actually moisture for some 2-3 days always, so even better than other mounts I have. Also, I was thinking about large size bark as well, there is many possibilities, I have another 3 of these feeders and planning to experiment more:-) I am imagining miniatures hooked on one side like the mini orchid wall, I think it can look awesome:-) Thinking also if I can make it work somehow with maybe hygrolon, there is ideas in my head:-)

Well, you live in Miami, here in NYC, in the winter, indoors. The sphag would hold the moisture for 30 hours.
