Default "Blue Mystique" Reblooms White

Yep, I bought one of these things, back when I didn't know better. We received our first phal as a gift. While shopping at Home Depot last Christmas, we noticed an orchid with striking blue flowers and bought it. So this is the first orchid we ever purchased and the second one to come into our home. When we got home, I noticed a small tag that said it would rebloom in white. I researched the Blue Mystique phals and quickly learned that it was a dye job, we had been scammed lol - this plant is affectionately known as flimflam.

But I'm glad we bought it. It has been a very vigorous grower and easy to take care of. It has rewarded all the work with a stalk that is three feet long and currently has 7 open flowers. I think it will end up with 12-14 flowers in all, but who knows. The white flowers, with a blush of yellow and red markings that look like a 'devilish' smiley face, is just beautiful. Much nicer than when they were blue!

When I repotted this plant, the inner plastic container had markings that indicated it was a "Pure Silk" hybrid. I have found a few references to the Pure Silk phal hybrid, but have not been able to find any pictures. Regardless, the flowers are just lovely.

This first pic is of the first bud that opened. I had been waiting for this event for months, but we had planned a vacation to Hawaii, and I figure this one opened up two days after we left home. That just killed me lol, but it was nice to have a tropical flower to welcome us back home after leaving paradise in Hawaii.

Next shot of the flowers and buds, taken last week.

The next pic was taken yesterday, the latest bud about to open:

And finally, a shot of the whole plant and the three foot stalk:

Very nice! And you got a registered hybrid in the deal. I looked it up in Orchid Wiz and it is a registered name. There were no pics available but the name Pure Silk would make me think of a white one.

Wonderful, and *what* a spike! Any trouble with the weight tipping the pot over?

Oh yeah! I bought a heavy ceramic orchid pot and placed the plant and plastic pot inside the ceramic one for stability. So far it's working, but I am thinking of hanging a heavy fishing weight from the opposite side of the stalk to further steady the whole thing.

I debated staking the stalk, but after asking on OB, and seeing pics of Rosiec's free-hanging spikes, I decided to not stake. But steadiness is definitely an issue.

Yes, most definitely! 18 and counting so far, but space is at a premium here. We need a new house!

Ahh cool, thanks! I have seen lots of pics of white phals for sale with very similar markings and color, but each site just lists them as a generic "white phal".
