I think most of us could tell you what to think...it's fascinating!

I understand your disappointment but I think this serendipity is a pleasant thing.

It is very unfortunate that you didn't get the phal that you thought you had purchased, but I agree, I think this one is gorgeous as well

Thanks for the nice comments guys!

My psychedelic Formosa is still with me. It has eight open flowers now and what looks like one, maybe two, more buds. Oh, and I think it's growing a second spike...

I had another orchid nut over a week ago, and he was impressed with it. Apparently, he wasn't prepared for how big the flowers are (10 cm, 3.9" across) and how dark the colour actually is. So, it seems this Phal should be experienced live to do itself justice.

I think it'll stay since it's so special looking...

LOL. I'm not that into 'splash' type flowers but that one is gorgeous! Definitely a keeper, and I think we all want keikis!

PS: I just googled Formosa Rose, and a lot of the flowers that came up are splash types. I think it's possible this is Formosa Rose, just a different clone than you were expecting?

I think it's a different clone (if seed grown) or if meristemed I think it could be a mutation.

I like it. I don't grow Phals but those patterns are amazing.

I have seen one vaguely similar to this before. Swirly purple like that. I thought it looked like raspberry vanilla ice cream swirled. :P Definitely a keeper!!

It's supposed to have a splash, but apparently the splash gene is very unstable in this hybrid, and some of them flower like this. So, yes, it IS a Formosa Rose, it just doesn't look like it should.

So, if you did get a different hybrid (not just a funky looking possibly the same hybrid as the theories go here)
would the seller do something about the mistake?
Or are you just screwed?

I recently purchased a Phal from orchids . Com and I am suspicious that it may not be the correct one. It could just be me being skeptical of buying an orchid while it's not in bloom tho. Paranoia.
Or paraNOIDa (ok that was dumb haha)
