Leaves on phalanopsis have reddish tinge

Hi guys, I know I have read about this before but couldn't find where the discussion was posted. In order to increase the light received by some of my smaller phals, I lowered the height of the lights so that they are about 6 inches or a foot from the plant at the leaves. I have noticed 2 with a pronounced reddish tinge to the leaves and I thought I remembered this was similiar to tanning in a human. What I can't remember is if this will damage the plant.

I know while lowering the lights will be good for the small phals, I do have a few bigger ones that when they spike, they will have to be repositioned so that the flower will be to the side of the ballast. Is that a problem?

GREAT NEWS!!! My Phalanopsis Amibilis has 2 spikes going. I also have a Phal Rong Guan Amah in spike. I thought I would never see that spike (gave up hope). I still have to sell off a few of the bigger ones to make room for my new ones coming tomorrow though. Regards, mary

While I doubt that the reddish tinge will make any negative difference, be careful. Phals can take higher than p[redicted light levels and bloom well in response, but reddish tinges may be pushing it. Just watch the plants for signs of stress and for signs of sun-burn.

Yes, the red tinge is an indication that the plant is reaching its limits as far as light goes. Keep the air circulating well around it or back it away from its source a few inches.

A red tinge can be maxing out on light, as indicated above. But it is also a common leaf color of *some* red/pink phals. I have some dtps (half pink doritis) that are really quite purply all the time.
