Phals stay in bloom for quite some time, but they are without flowers for even longer time (well, for the most part with some exceptions of ever flowering types).
I too find phals leaves rather boring, although not as bad as oncidiums that look like some unrully grass without flowers. My personal standpoint.
I do not like artificial flowers either.
As someone mentioned above, I simply find a nice looking pot and maybe decorate with some colorful papers around to enhance the appearance of the plant.
As much as I hate the long waiting between bloom season, I think that anticipation in a way helps me appreciate the beautiful blooms even more when they do come back and flower.
With that said, I have lots of flowers so I always have something in bloom.
If not, I buy fresh cutflowers to keep me happier.
Oh, I also find looking at phals leaves and roots growing during no flower season. They grow fast and I just love observing them!
sorry, no real practical help for you.
