Weird Growth on Phal
Question Weird Growth on Phal

Hello, Everyone

My turn to report something really weird looking on the Phal. I just happened to spot it tonight when putting a plant under growth lights..... The bump at the base is shiny, swallen and almost looks like... a tumor. Definitely not like a root.... Basal keiki?? Shall I be concerned? I never seen anything like that before.
It's a rescue Phal that been through Sphag-N-Bag for a few months, and then regrown its roots and leaves all over again and been doing really well after repotting.... So I don't think there's possibility for scale or other bugs to hide in the tissues....

Your expertise and suggestions are much appreciated!

I really don't think there's much you can do other than just wait and see what happens. Keep us posted!

It should eventually work its way clear, and you can also try to VERY GENTLY free it.

It could also be a keiki which is a baby plant. These can form at the base of the mother plant. In either case, this is a good thing.

Wait and see, isn't what we always do with orchids?

I'd wiggle it a little bit and see what happens. On my oncidium the last spike it had was stuck between the leaf and the pbulb causing it to grow in a loop. Had I not seen it the plant would of probably abandoned the spike.

UPDATE!

Well, I took a deep breath and - did a surgery! The "tumor", you were all right, turned out to be a spike growing backwards and THROUGH the thick bottom leaf.

I never done anything more scary than chopping this leaf around and through, and trying not to hurt the spike. I hope things will turned out as they are supposed to!

Thanks again, Everyone, for your timely support! I'm glad I asked! You are the best!
