A new mini phal of the week from TJ :)
Default A new mini phal of the week from TJ :)

I picked this one up yesterday at TJ while I was visiting for some grocery.

It is NOID. I believe it is the same cross as one I bought from the same store a few weeks ago.
They still have a whole bunch of that one and this one has rather unique color pattern, so I picked it up.

Now, that first one I bought has changed its color to nearly white.

I'm yet to find out whether or not this one will also get washed out in a few weeks. very interesting!

This one was in moss that was dripping wet. The moss was so tightly packed that I could see the roots dying already! I repotted to a small grade bark mix.
I guess the shock wasn't too bad as I don't see any flowers drying up or little leaves drying up. well, at least not yet, but hope nothing happens.

Very pretty indeed!
I too would be interested to know why Phals change colors after some time as it's happened to me too. Is that a permanent change - fading and what factors bring it on?

Pretty color and beautiful pattern on the blooms! Never had any orchid that changed color, excepting for fading a little. Does the lip change color too?

You have great luck at Trader Joe's! (I Wish) Depending on your point of view, maybe you shouldn't go the TJ's so often

Well, so far, only one phal I own have changed color.
It's the one that I believe to be the same cross as this one.
It is different than fading of color as the flowers age.
A few flowers looked very similar in color pattern as flowers of this plant. then over the course of few weeks, the newer buds opened up to be much whiter than the previous flowers.
I am curious to see what this plant will do.

Yeah, this one looks quite different!
I hope it stays this way.

The newer buds of my other phal opened up much whiter overall, and the lips (that are solid dark red purple on the previous flowers) are white with some red spots.

I should post some pictures some time.

Well, I visit TJ at least once a week usually.
I of course check the plant section everytime "just in case".

Most of the time, the quality of the plants are not there. or something I already have or not interested.

When I do find something good, I just grab it. I think I bought about 10 orchids from TJ in the past 5 months, so not too bad, isn't it? I do understand your worry though.

Only about half of those purchase are still here. well, most of them are the recently bought mini phals.
The other half were common intergenerics that I had just for the enjoyment of flowers for a month or two.

I think I'll try and keep these mini phals as long as they do not die on me. I tend to kill (not intentionally) mini phals easy for some reason I don't understand.

By the way, I saw this super tiny mini phal that had cream yellow flowers with maroon dots. There was only one. I almost bought it, but then I waited in case I would see more of them in the future. The flowers looked rather off. I'm a bit anal that way even for a plant that's under $10.

Default Before and after pics

The first one is when I first bought the mentioned plant back in September. It looks just like the one this original thread deals with, although they could well be of different cross. both being NOID, only God knows I guess.

The second picture was taken a couple of days ago. The bloom is overall washed out basically. The color on the lips changed from solid dark red purple to white with some red and maroon spots.

The change is quite dramatic that one wouldn't be able to tell these two pictures are of the same plant unless told so.

Crazy, isn't it??
