Phal spiking from crown -help -bandes

A friend gives me supermarket plants after they have bloomed. The last phal had a spent flower spike coming directly out of the crown. Can this plant be saved? It is spiking again but this time not from the crown. Thanks - bandes

That's known as a 'terminal spike' and the plant will eventually die. The good news is that, if you care for it properly, there's a very good chance that you'll have one or more keikies form at the base of the plant. Of course those keikies will be two or more years away from blooming so it's up to you whether you want to care for the plant and see what happens or throw it out. Good luck.

Thanks so much - I'll wait for the new spike to bloom, give it a year and see is a keiki forms.

if its a healthy plant, it very well may bloom sooner off a keiki. because the keiki still has the "maturity" of the mother plant, if the keiki is still connected.

it may also bloom from lower leaf bracts, so as long as its alive, id say keep it!
