Default Two in one? (photos)

New beginnings! So, I got married, moved to a new home and have tried my hand at keeping house plants. I never thought I'd have the ability to grow plants since I've never tried, but I'm loving it!!

For our housewarming gift, my mother in law gave me a phalaenopsis orchid. I've had it for almost two years now and it has bloomed for us twice. The longest bloom lasting five and a half months.

The bloom came from the orchid hanging above. I fear that I may harm it by cutting off the stem and its roots. It has finally dropped all of its flowers and I'm thinking I need to repot it soon. It looks as if it has two sets of orchids in one pot. How can I cut this safely? or should i just leave it alone? If there is a video that you know about that can help, that would be great.

Please advise.

Hello and welcome! What you have is a baby growing from the old flower spike. It is called a keiki. It has enough roots to remove it from the spike. Just use a sterile sharp tool and cut the plant from the flower spike. You can cut the spike to remove it. It won't hurt the plant. You can then cut the spike completely off of the mother plant too. Cut as close to the base of the plant as you can. Some people say about an inch from the base. Try not to break any roots on the keiki. Then you can pot it in its own pot. It will be identicle to the mother plant. If you haven't repotted the mother plant yet you should. What is it growing in now? A bark mix or moss? It looks like it is in moss and it looks old. So try and repot soon. Good luck!

Welcome to the OB!
one thing you really need to do is soak the keikies roots for a long time to make them pliable before potting so that you don't break them when you repot.
If mummy was planted in bark you should also soak the bark a long time before potting them.
Keep us posted on what you do & welcome again!

Thank you Wynn Dee13 and nenella. I appreciate your sound advice. In this order, I'll cut the spike, soak the roots until their malleable and will repot it. Does the mummy need a larger pot than what it's in now? If so, how many times will I have to upsize? Might as well purchase all of the pots at once. And to answer your question, it's growing in a mix of moss and soil. Thanks again! Such a nice forum.

It shouldn't be in soil. I guess it could be in a peat mix but that isn't good either. I would get a bark mix and mix in some sphagnum moss or use straight moss. It depends on your watering habits. If you tend to over water than I wouldn't suggest straight sphag moss. You can also use a bark mix but it won't hold as much moisture. It all depends on what you are used to. If your plant really is in soil I don't know how it is still alive. Phalaenopsis live as epiphytes in the wild so their roots are exposed to air all the time. They don't grow in soil. Phals usually come in bark or moss. Are you sure it is soil? Or is it bark that is really decomposed? If you use sphagnum moss don't pack it too tight. I use the sphag moss but I either use unglazed clay pots since they breath or I use clear slotted plastic pots. For my Phals I use the clear slotted plastic pots and sphag moss. Do not use Miricle Grow Orchid mix! It is only peat moss and perlite so it is too much like potting soil which will rot your roots. If you use a bark mix you need to soak it for at least 24 hours. New bark doesn't hold water like older bark does so you will find you might need to water more.

As far as the pot size you should put it in a pot that just fits the healthy roots snugly. If you end up finding that the plant has a lot of dead roots when you unpot it you might need to go down in pot size. You do not want to over pot. You don't need to pot a size bigger for Phals. Match the pot to the roots not the top growth. If it is top heavy you can put the pot it is in into another heavier pot but leave some air spaces between the pots. Many people here like to use clear plastic pots so you can see what the roots are doing. Phal roots will also photosynthesize if they are exposed to light.

When you repot cut off any squishy hollow roots. If they are firm they are healthy. You could find some roots that are firm on part of the root but are squishy and rotted on the other part. You can cut off the dead rotted part and seal the cut edge with cinnamon powder. But make sure you don't get the cinnamon powder on the roots more than that because it will dry them up. There is a great thread called the Phal abuse ends here. It is really long but I recommend reading it. It has a lot of info on Phals. Here is the link. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ends-here.htmlIf you have anymore questions let us know.

One more thing. Since you will be starting with a new medium you might want to use the skewer trick to help you know when to water. Put a wooden kabob skewer in the middle of the pot and keep it there. Try and always put it back in the same place. Pull it out and if the skewer is wet or damp it is not time to water. If it is dry then water. If your not sure if it is dry enough wait one more day and check again. This has worked great for many members here. The middle of the pot dries out last so even though the top is dry the middle could be still wet. Good luck!
