Mounted shilleriana - Orchid Board

I have had this piece of bark for some time and have been struggling with what to put on it. The potential of the silvery roots of shilleriana won out and here it is. I had it tied on with some green plastic covered tie material but it looked gaudy. I switched to the very small gage copper wire and am VERY happy with the resulting look.

Quick question for those who mount phals, paphs, and phrags...and such. When mounted like this, doesn't spraying or dunking daily when watering cause crown rot? Just curious since I have a few phals mounted and I am not quite sure how to go about watering......what method do you use?

This is the natural growing orientation for phals, with the crown pointing down towards the ground. You could spray it 24/7 and you would be hard pressed to get any serious accumulation of water in its crown. Any that did would drain out almost immediately after the flow of water ceased. Pretty smart plant, eh?

Becca...truely Steven's words are gospel. I also have a few dend and catts that are mounted with and without the crown facing down and have never had a problem with mine getting crown rot. I dunk mine every 3 days and mist daily. I do not fear (knock on wood) rot with the air circulation I have where they are located which is a big plus.

Beautiful plant. I love the roots and leaves of this species. If only I could keep my humidity above 50% in the winter I would certainly add it to my collection and give it a try. Very nicely mounted too!

Steven, the natural growing orientation for phals explains it all....so it is growing them in pots in a upright position that is un-natural for them! I will have to come and see your collection once the cold weather sets in and things slow down. Thanks for the help!
