This was a Noid I picked up in the supermarket. It was in bloom when I got it, and bloomed again shortly after, and both times it was fine. So if it is a genetic mishap and not insecticide related, hopefully the next spike (who knows when!) will be normal.

maybe kind of like self protection against too much sun as in the leaves getting purple cast?

The second bud on my den just fell off dry. The rest, there are 6 more, are all very dark in color, so I guess you are right. nothing much can be done at this point.

This is a surprise spike off a leafless dry and wrinkled cane with no roots. I saved it because I liked the bloom last year very much. It is growing a tiny little cane with two new roots coming out. I mist everyday to keep the plant hydrated, but I guess the developing flowers are taking lots of water, explaining the falling of the second bud probably?

Anyway, two of my phals have buds to open soon. I am now very interested in seeing how they will look.

It's amazing how much growing conditions can influence color. I have a barred Phal, and depending on how much light it got while the buds were developing, the barring will be either very dense, or only a few. Another Phal bloomed out nearly a totally different color.

I guess I will move the plants in bud away from the window then. I'm afraid this might reduce the flower count though. oh, well...more flowers or better color? tough!

I noticed some dens develop purplish cast and some don't. This particular one is one of those whose leaves and cane turned purple. so I wonder if the leaves do not develop purple cast, that means flower color will not be affected. hmmmm.

Camille that is a total bummer! Do you think it was the spray?? If so, you could blame it on the spray. That teaches all of us.

On the other side of the coin, you are an awesome grower and have helped so many. Thanks!!!!!

It could be the spray so don't lose heart. I wonder if you cut the spike in a while and if it were to develop new buds that weren't sprayed if they would be normal!

We'll see what happens, there are 3 more buds to go on the main spike, and 3 on the side spike.

I actually had something similar happen like this, there were two buds that were malformed as a fluke, but all the others were perfect! Dont get discouraged yet! wishing you the best. Maby spraying it did mess with the flowers. Don't worry yet
