Default Phal. Penang Girl

My Phal Penang Girl is in bloom. I got this a year ago from Paramount. In the 2nd picture you can see a 2nd spike with a bud hiding under the leaf on the left and a 3rd spike just starting near the crown.

Ooo, very nice colour!!! These are floriferous little guys, hey! The largest bud on mine is a week or less (not too sure) from opening, and then there are another four behind it. And I am very convinced (practically 100%) that this is a Joshua Irwin Ginsberg. It would be nearly impossible for a violacea to make these kinds of colours.

Gorgeous! It's gonig to look even better if all those spikes bloom at the same time. Funny that you post it, this evening I put it on my wishlist for an order I will make at a german grower!

Cody, that's interesting, because I've come across this topic in a french forum recently and the discussion seems to be not so much about what are the parents of Penang Girl, but more about Joshua Irwin Ginsberg getting mislabeled as Penang Girl (and vice versa) because of the violacea and bellina naming issue.

Ya, I don't know what to call it now. I wish they would quit re-naming everything. I wonder if they foresee these kind of issues when they go on a re-naming rampage!

Well, if Penang Girl is registered with violacea, and Joshua Irwin Ginsberg registered with bellina, I do say it would be relatively easy to decide what it is. In breeding, violacea is known to spread out the colour, which is obvious in some well known true Penang Girl cultivars such as 'Chin Yo' and 'TH'. In these plants from Paramount, it is obvious that there were made with a bellina, and the cross must have been made by someone who is a little behind on the name change, and had it labelled as a violacea var. borneo).

Oops, I was a bit quick in reading your first comment Cody, and thought you were saying that the Joshua one was a parent of Penang (instead of the 2 being mislabeled). That's what happens when I'm on OB at 1am....

Beautiful flower what ever its name is. Phal Penang Girl is on my wish list now too. I think I am getting into fragrant phals.

Thanks. This one is definitely fragrant. A bit of a lemony or soapy smell in there too.

If you like fragrant Phals, I've read that Phal Liodora is a really nice one. The only trouble is that it also has a naming issue from what I've read, Liodora is a trade name, no one knows what it really is. But it's cute, and super fragrant!
