Phal without any roots Male
Default Phal without any roots

About six or seven months ago, one of my phals started growing a secondary spike. Then all of a sudden, this spike stopped growing and stayed like that for several months. One day I noticed that the spike had tripled. Only two of the three spikes are thriving, but the most curious is that the plant hasn't got any roots left. I noticed that the leaves started yellowing and fell off one after the other, so I decided to take the plant out of the pot and have a look at the roots. They were all rotten and I had to cut them all off. Of course, the three leaves it had left also started shriveling more and more and finaly fell off. But the spikes have continued growing and one of them is even forming bloom buds. Lower on the stem another secondary spike is starting to grow. I mist the stem every day to give it humidity and I've started watering with B1 to see if there will be root grow. Next time I have to water I'll take her out of the pot again, to see if anything is happening down there.
Here are two pictures of it. When I take her out of the pot, I'll post some pictures of the whole plant.

Orquiadicto, I'm not an expert, but in my opinion once a phal loses both leaves and roots, there is little chance it will recover. You may continue misting the surface of the medium, because sometimes phal can grow a basal keiki. It may also start a keiki at the end of the inflorescence. Or it might just die. In either case it's a great learning experience for you. I wish you and your 'chid luck.

It must still be photosynthsising through the spike and the roots because it will take a lot of energy to produce blooms in your case without any leaves. I think this is a real case of how much these plants want to survive . Keep us posted on whether you recieve any blooms or keiki

The plant is trying to bloom and might produce a basal or a spike keiki...its the last attempt to preserve itself. This proves that the root and leaves have given the spike enough energy to bloom and its job is done...it is surviving with no leaves or roots.
Im curious what would be the final outcome of this plant.

I hope I'll get a keiki so I won't lose this plant totally.

What are the roots like? ..if you have good roots you have a vetry goood chance of getting a basal keiki .... :fingcross: for you!
Have you tried to soak in rooting hormone?

Perhaps I didn't express myself properly. THERE ARE NO ROOTS. NEITHER GOOD ROOTS NOR ROTTEN ONES. CERO, NOTHING.
