Baldan's Kaleidoscope

So I'm sure you guys have seen a few of these before, however I wanted to show off my newest edition from Peach State Orchids. My son and I had a morning out together where we looked around the greenhouse at different orchids. It was hard narrowing it down to one there were 3 phals I wanted to bring home. Surprisingly after looking around my son stated that if I was buying myself one he was getting one too. I didn't think to ask what the name was of the one he picked out but it looks like Dtps I-Hsin Sun Beauty to me. I also noticed once I got home that my Baldan's has some sort of growth coming from between the leaves. Can anyone tell me if it's a spike or a root? The new growth at the tip is purple-ish like the other inflorescence but the sheath is grey-ish like the roots below.
