Dtps. I-Hsin Ice Coke

This is a plant I have had for years. I wanted to know what the deal is with the Dtps. (Doritaenopsis) I have read, some, threads about this but do not really have the jist of it. This guy is a nice plant and a prolific bloomer.

What do you want to know about Doritaenopsis? It's a cross between a Phalaenopsis and a Doritis. A Doritis is a terrestrial orchid and it grows in brighter light than a phalaenopsis. For that reason they can usually tolerate a little more light than a phal and they shouldn't be as prone to root rot as phals are. I'm not sure why breeders crossed the two species but it may be to get a higher flower count or to reduce the size of the plant. Doritis is smaller than phal..

But your plant certainly isn't small. That's a healthy, well grown orchid. Good job.

I am on board with that. But, I think I have read that they are calling them Phals not Dtps or Dort. I am not sure of the classification, I guess?

You heard right, Phal naming was simplified, and they are ALL Phals now. I can understand the logic, but it's created a naming nightmare, as there are cases where very different looking Phal and Dtps had the same hybrid name, but now that they lumped in the same genera, there is no way to tell apart the 2 hybrids....
The now ex Dtps have a sightly different growth habit. They tend to have inherited Doritis's wide spacing of the leaves, and the plant has a more corn stalk look to it.

Tucker, I just pulled out my book 'Moth Orchids, A complete Guide to Phalaenopsis', and got an answer to your question of why breed Phals and Doritis. Doritis pulcherrima "has been important in contributing its brilliant flower color, upright flower spike and compact plant size to its offspring. The blue form is used to add bluish flowers to doritaenopsis hybrids".

If you're into Phals and the different lines of color breeding, this is a good book. And like I wrote above, for all the species in the book their contribution to hybrids is also detailed.

Camille, I actually have that book, but I was too lazy to look it up. I think it's a wonderful book even though mostly about breeding.

I have this hybrid, too. I was actually a bit disappointed when it first bloomed, but only because the picture on the vendor's website made it look more orange than watermelon (or whatever color you'd call it). Once I got used to it though, I rather liked it.
