Phals in Bloom again!
Default

Thanks, everyone!

Josh- We don't have Lowes in Manhattan. It would be nice to find cattleyas at Home Depot here but they only carry phals as far as orchids are concerned, and the plants they sell look terrible usually. It is sad. I wonder how many people actually buy all beat up looking plants.

That is why I say I got super lucky last year because I found two very pretty plants that were also very healthy.

Ahhh, mis-read what store.

Yea, I would be picking up a cattleya if I had a good enough area to grow them. Maybe when I get a light.

Really nice Phal. One of my favourites has similar colouring and is also a NoID.

Phals in Bloom again!
Default fully open...

Both the white one with red lip and the white/pink candy stripe phals are in full bloom with eight flowers each.

I just took a picture of the candy stripe one in the bathroom. For some reason, the flower orientation is reckless while the white one is perfectly facing one direction.

Still pretty flowers to look at.

I'm usually no fan of white Phals, but with that lip it's just gorgeous. I agree with Junebug that all your plants look well grown.

I understand why it's your favourite.

I love your Phals. I think I see other healthy looking orchids in the background. What else are you growing?

Phals in Bloom again!
Default Thank you, all!

What others do I grow?

Well, I have lots of plants, mostly common hybrids, but those are what I love.

Lots of dendrobiums, Sharry Baby( a few different varieties) and other oncidium alliance, lots of paphs, and a few phals. I'm sorry the names are not very specific at all, but there are just too many to list actually. hehe

I'm in the process of getting rid of quite a few before I move to a new place next month. My goal is to keep the ones I love the most and then start to collect some sun loving plants that I was unable to grow in my current condition.

Phals in Bloom again!
Default Growing season begins!

As the weather gets warmer and warmer, all the phals are sending up new roots and leaves.
The pink candy stripe one is given away, but the while one with red lip is here with me, still in bloom.

I noticed that phals tend to adjust my dry condition by losing bottom leaves and keeping only about 4-5 leaves. Each year, they grow two new leaves (except for some that grow up to 4 leaves!) and then lose two oldest leaves.

This particular white/red lip one is the only exception. It has only lost one very small seedling leaf and has 9 leaves with it.

I grew this one under LED light last year and it was successful I would say. This year, I have it about three feet away from the south window. I will see what difference this will make.

love to see a new leaf coming from the center of phalaenopsis!
