Phal. bud blast galore!!

Ripening fruit (especially bananas), propane/LNG combustion, humidity swings and cold drafts, should all be avoided. One winter my phals got a weird cross breeze every time someone opened the front door - it wasn't pretty. I never thought they could have bee effected as they were on the other side of the house - but sure enough that was the culprit.

Correct, there's gotta be something wrong in the environment if all your phals are losing all the buds.

By the way, do you have other orchids that are in bud or flower this time of the year?
If they are fine, then those phals gotta have issues. hahaha!

Well, if you do cut the un-brown & dry spike make sure it's with a sterilized knife or a single edge throw away blade and cinnamon on the cut will prevent infections.

Camille, you say there is no heat in the orchid room. What has the temp in there been running? Phals are warm growers, and flower buds are very sensitive to cold.

Terri room temp. Is mild about 64 degrees, is that too cold for them?

That shouldn't be too cool. To initiate the spike and blooms, I subject mine to night lows in the lower 60's with occasional dips into the upper 50's though that's pushing it a bit. Is your temp a daytime high, night low or the temp it remains at throughout the day and night?

64 during the day would be rather low for the phals, although it may not cause the bud blasting as long as it has been consistantly that way.
Lower temperature cause the buds develop slower until they open up.

By the way, if all the buds are blasted recently, why dont you try and cut the spike where the first bud was, and see if extra spike may emerge from the next node. It is a fairly common phenomenon for phals to produce additional spike off the main spike if the main spike gets damaged before the flowers open.

You got nothing to lose. but you will have to do something about the cold draft and the heating or your phals may experience bud blasting again.

That's the temp. At night during the day it goes up a bit naturally since its sunny. Some of the phals are growing out of old spikes that u cut above one of the nodes, so do I cut off the fresh spike out of an old node? Or choose another node off the main spike n cut above that one the way I did before?
