Almost dead but now putting out a basal keiki
My Dtps I-Hsin Balloon that I bought last spring (and discovered crown rot when I got it home) bloomed then began the downhill, inevitable decline that comes from crown rot. It's hung on all summer with the two remaining leaves aging but still hanging in there. I've thought about just throwing it out several times. (The vendor did send me a healthy replacement.)
However, yesterday, while looking it over and thinking about pitching it, I discovered a little green leaf coming out of the bottom - a basal keiki. After reading about those on here, I'm thrilled and hopeful that it'll grow up and take over. Then I'll have two I-Hsin Balloons but that's okay. They're beautiful. (Sorry, don't have a pic.)

Ah! Good job being patient! As Camille said, they aren't dead until they're dust.  Sometimes you just have to move them closer to the compost heap before they realize they better show some signs of life.  |
