That's a wonderful pattern and colour combo! About how large are the flowers? Wish we could get deals like that. Home depot and Walmart both carry phals but their prices are in the $14.00 to $16.00 range for NOID's! And I've never seen one anything like that although I got a white/purple splotchy one at Walmart last winter.

Glen, there are some harlequin Phals that do breed true ! This one was, I think, 2nd generation and I killed it but miss it !!! Look at these blooms and tell me they aren't all exactly the same !

Merlyn - You are absolutely right that some 2nd generation crosses are completely symetrical and blom true from year to year, you will usually find that in those plant whose spots have coalesced almost to a solid color and no longer have random spots much like your example Phal, which by the way I also like very much and have also managed to kill.

You will also find that sometimes when you cross a harlequin Phal on a solid Phal you wind up with a Phal that has what I call "French Spots", fine, small and precisely patterned spots.

I can also show you bunches of harlequin Phals who from year to year have comepletely different spotting patterns.

It's funny, it took me years to even be able to look at them and appreciate their beauty. When I first saw one all that went thru my old fashioned mind was color break and virus. I still sometimes cringe even though I know better.

Fortunately for me I now, for the most part, only grow Phal species.

By the way, I found this aricle I thought you might find interesting:
Golden Peoker

me too, i thought they were strange. then i started to like their playfulness and the splashes of color the orchid stands.

actually, i've seen quite a few of the exact (well maybe not exact parentage but same apperance) hybrid you pictured!!! i regret never buying them, again for the hefty $16 for a NOID hd phal, i dont think so. i think they were always from the company called gubler's

Merlyn - Thank you, as far as you getting your Phal Ever Spring 'Light' from a big box store, it doesn't surprise me. SunBulb Company that supplies them, outside of species, almost exclusively grows and sells clones.

Merlyn - And all three are wonderful plants. I don't sneer at big box store orchids, I dont buy them because they, for the most part are not what I am interested in growing. I will admit though, I did get my Encyclia tampensis alba from Home Depot and I swear that it is a clone of a Carter&Holmes plant. Couldn't pass it up at $5.00.

How come our Home Depots or Lowes don't carry different orchids? I see mostly NOID phals. Don't need any more of those.

I've even seen phals at Oceans (asian grocery store) for about $14.

Yes, here in Canada we get no variety in the box stores. What a rip! And the NOID's aren't even cheap
