You may have discovered that orchids can be quite tenacious...I was gone for a month and when I returned they were still alive but dried up and shrivelling...I continued on my normal regime of watering and fertilizing and it perked up and grew new leaves and some bloomed. But I promised all of them that I will not do that ever again !
It's sort of a moot point now, but at times when I was away in the past, I would simply wrap up the pots in plastic grocery bags (not the leaves, just the pot so the medium stays moist) and then leave the plants somewhere sort of shady. I was away for a whole month once, and this method worked fine. I grow in sphagnum, and the moss was still moist when I got back. No mold or anything.
