Are there any red Phals?

I am not a huge fan of the Phals that have glossy blooms. Are there any that bloom red with silky blooms?

Depends on what you mean... Most of the red phals (perhaps all of them, I'm not an expert) are derived from species that have thick waxy blooms. I assume that is what you mean by shiny...

If red/purple is your thing, then look into some of the newer 'harlequin' type breeding. If I know what you mean by silky (like a standard white?). I haven't seen anything in that line of breeding that I would call 'red'. Purple or magenta, or deep pink, maybe.

I guess I should have been more specific. I did mean the thick, waxy, glossy looking flowers. The type that when you photograph them, they reflect light like glass.

There are a ton of hybrids out there that are red, but they all seem to have these waxy blooms.

What I meant by silky blooms is like the big floofy pink and white phals you see everwhere. When you feel the bloom it is soft and thin like silk. Most of the harlequins I have seen lean more towards a maroon splotchy color.
I have some phals that have blooms that are in between the silky thin blooms and the waxy thick ones. They are a little waxy, but don't have the glossy look to them.

So to clarify, I am looking for a phal that blooms without glossy, waxy blooms that is candy apple red. The shape of the bloom doesn't matter really. Does it exist?

I haven't seen one... Doesn't mean they don't exist.

I will have to keep looking. I guess the source of the red in hybrids comes from Phals with red barring in the coloration? All of those have glossy blooms, and I guess gloss is a dominant trait? Yikes! I may be learning something about orchid breeding.

Somebody will no doubt correct me, but I think a lot of the red comes from Phal. gigantea. No doubt some other species too. But yes, all of those species have waxy, very heavy flowers, and that comes through in the hybrids.

Ha ha ha, no. What I really want is a Phal colored like besseae. They are the same thing, but my way doesn't involve ruining a perfectly good besseae.
