Should I cut prune this spike?
Default Should I cut prune this spike?

I got this plant a year ago as a housewarming gift from a friend. It was called something like "Just add ice" or something about ice. It came with two spikes and I've been treating it well and it has been in constant bloom now for 12 months. I figured I might eventually get a keiki, but the spikes just keeps branching. Now there are six growing ends of flower spikes, which is too much for this little plant; it only has about one open flower at a time anymore.

Would you cut the stems all the way back, or just prune off the side spikes? I'm afraid if I cut them all the way back I won't have flowers for another year, and I'm not stoked about having a NOID with no flowers in my window for a year. Thoughts?

A had the same situation.I'd just cut the spike all the way back. So then it can focus on growing leaves and roots.

For my 2 cents: If you enjoy the flowers, let it keep flowering as long as the plant is healthy. When the flowers stop, cut the spikes down to about an inch from the base of the plant and let it prepare for blooming next year.

Option #3. If you are enjoying the flowers, leave them alone. When they finally do drop off, cut the spike above a lower node like at below position #1. Then at that node it might grow a new spike and put out an entirely new set of blooms.

I would also leave them alone. The plant looks healthy enough. Having one bud open at a time is not necessarily a sign of weakness, it often happens on spikes that continue blooming by elongating the tip. I have one phal that I been blooming like this (all the while growing new spikes which then do the same) since December 2008! And it's still a perfectly healthy plant which grows 2 new leaves every year.
