To cut or not to cut these spikes... Male
Default To cut or not to cut these spikes...

Hey all. I dont want to delve into the whether or not to cut a spike question, but more to ask about these specific phals. I didn't know if they are like normal hybrids where its best to cut, or like violacea and others where it's best to leave it.
The first is a Phal Cranberry Queen (venosa x cherokee cheif). The last bloom is sadly about to fall, but I wasn't sure if this is one of the types you should leave the spike as it's a frequent rebloomer or not.
The second is a Phal Fancy Free 'scarlet spring' (I believe the parentage to be aileen stoops x ??). Also in bloom right now, but unsure of what to do with the spikes.
Thanks!

Deffinitely leave the Cranberry Queen's spike on, being that it has venosa as a parent, and venosa is one of the phals that will lenghten the spike. I am not sure about your other phal though, hope this helped!

Just heard back from Hausermann's. Fancy Free 'Scarlet Spring' is (Aileen Stoops x Corning's Violet)

I would also leave the spike on for the Fancy Free 'Scarlet Spring.' The RHS says that Corning's Violet is (violacea x corningiana), both which will extend their spikes. So both of your phals should keep their spikes until next year, when they should extend their current ones, and grow new ones! I don't see why novelty phals aren't more popular!

yeah - I always wait for spikes to be dead before cutting anyway - can't go wrong that way
