I've read that the next blooming may have a tinge of blue. But certaintly won't be as vivid but eventually it will bloom white

I think it's a dye with silver in it

Silver solution injected into the roots is the source of the radiant blue. Should fade back to white by 3rd blooming.

Similar to the guy who dyed his face blue by self-medicating with a silver compound. But, in his case, the blue was permanent.

DSDNYC: Thanks for the link. Boy, are the con artists (IMHO) at work on this description. They make it sound like the color is natural and insinuate the future flowers will also be blue. The discussion is also interesting. Actually, all of us who are revolted by this "thing" have to do is not buy it or even give it publicity. Hopefully good taste will win out eventually.

I'm equally repulsed by that unnatural blue. When you see this orchid, which I did in a store in NYC, sitting next to any other living plant, you can tell something is amiss. I understand it is a huge seller in Europe. Probably will be a big seller in the US too.

BTW,You might find this interesting, it's a link to the story of Paul Karason, the guy who turned his skin blue by ingesting colloidal silver, which he got from his local health food store as a treatment for fungus and sinus related issues. Silver is very light sensitive which is why it is also used as a coating for photo paper used in black and white photography

Blue man Paul Karason is still blue after he self-medicates with silver for a skin condition | Mail Online

I think that I've seen the blue orchids only once in Europe, and that was at a show. I think it's the other way around, they're starting to be big in the US, and slowly appearing in Europe.

If you don't like them don't buy them. In a way they can be a good thing, since many non orchid growers find them attractive. If that's a way to get them interested in orchids and start growing named hybrids and species, so be it!

I think this is an excellent point!

The outrage should be there to begin with and not necessarily for the blue hue

Outrage over the manner in which the plants are produced and distributed to feed a market that could really care less; the "blue" is just a symptom.

Over the past few years I have seen Phalaenopsis orchids go from flower show specialties to super market stock.

Why does this bother me? It is a symptom of a world that is consumption crazy. Of course, as a US citizen I can only speak of our country. I will put forth our own economy and withering dollar as proof.

The hardest part is for me to look at myself and decide if I am any different
I think I am and I will not elaborate on "why"... in the same sense, I also resemble the problem.

"Blue Orchids" have caused me to look in the mirror and want to be better.

....how's that for wondering off topic!
