Phal. Maki Watanabe
Phal. Maki Watanabe in flower, grown in large kitchen bay window. I picked 2 of these up at Rona to use as demo plants for a local garden club talk I did for a friend. Not bad for $7.50 each on the clearance table!

I was actually looking at some discounted Dendrobiums for the demo. The next time I was there, I spied these 2 Phals. and had an idea what the cross might look like - so far 1 plant is pretty nice. The other one is not doing much yet - sulking I think.

Hi Dave,
They're lovely flowers, but their coloration is very dark for most Maki Watanabes. Usually you see a lavender blush, fading to white by the outer edges of the petals and sepals.
Does it have a clonal name?
(It is a beautiful bloom - and for the price, how could you resist?)

The picture was taken beside my light area, so it is front lit with a black background. Here is the same plant back in it's normal growing area, now it is front lit and natural light background. Is that a bit more like the norm? Lighting has an amazing effect on the pictures. No clonal name on either two.

I think the black background photo is more dramatic, but the flower coloration is prettier in the second shot, as Tindo said. Lighting has amazing effects on orchid photography. I love playing with it, trying to capture true color. Easier said than done!
Maki Watanabe tends to start with a blush in the center that fades to pure white, perhaps half way across the petals. Yours has more blush and less white - hence my comment. But sib variation can be so great, I'm not suggesting it's something else. It's just blushing a lot!
Very pretty!
