That tight sphagnum is how the Taiwanese pot all their plants. I am moving all my Phals to sphagnum. It grows amazing plants. The rules are different though. You might only water once every 2 weeks and use very little fertilizer because the sphagnum will retain it.

Have you been repotting them that tight and how long have you been doing that way. I will tell you I have never seen such nice roots and not any bad ones. How do you water when you do? Like I said when I watered the one the water would come back over the top it would not go soak down. When I looked at the bottom part of the pot it was dry. I set it in a dish of water and it sucked up all of the water. That is why I chose to repot it. I probably killed it!

Ben, I use a "RepotMe", type, spag/bark mix packed lose. Are you potting yours tight and 100% spag, like these from Norman's? I have put a couple of pictures of the way they are when I receive them. The third picture is the way I repotted one of them. Am I screwing them up by changing it? As you can see the first picture the bottom third of the spag is dry. When I watered it the water just sat on the top andsoaked in until it went 2/3 of the way down. I will have to set it in a cup of water to let the bottom 1/3 soak it up?
