One solution could be to find a way to attach a string that would exert slight downwards pressure on the spike, and you'd adjust the pressure as it grows. I'm trained spikes to grow more upwards like that, so why not downwards?

That's a good idea. I could gt skmepadding so as not to hurt the spike. I could tie the string to the shelf and admit the pressure little by little.
Thanks
Btw. When the blooms open, if I change the placing of the orchid so as to display it better, will the orientation if e blooms also change?

Once the blooms are open there's nearly no risk of them rotating anymore. That's partially why I move the phals out to the living room before the buds are fully formed, since the orchid will not move from that spot until blooming is over.

okay, i was thinking that if i let it bloom fully ( as suggested.... would be bottom shelf for that) then bring it back up to its current spot and let the spike come out from under the lights, and i can tie it down a bit if need be

I either move my phals to their 'show off' spot in the living room either before any buds open or after they almost all open, so that they don't face different directions from being moved. I would say that you could move yours now if you have a bright enough spot for it.

No idea, my display area in France is right next to a south facing window. I'm guessing that the buds would maybe just develop a bit slower in low light but I really don't know.
