they are grown in moss as this has been the best overall method of growing phals back to the days of osmunda. all my phals are grown in moss except the new arrivals which are given a couple of weeks to over come any shock from shipping and a new enviroment, once this is done then they are switched to moss only and are watered everyday which helps promote more blooms and helps prevent moisture stress in the peak hours in the afternoon and evening when the temps are at their highest. during peak hours of heat the plants are unable to absorb water through the roots as fast as they transpire it through the leaves, resulting in a deficit that negatively impacts their metabolism. the nearly saturated root zone produced by the moss minimizes this stress. this is particularly important i subtropical regions such as florida, where afternoon heat loads are considerable and can be deleterious
