Brad, a cultivar is a particular plant within a species or hybrid which has been named. Usually this is done when a plant is awarded, or it may just be done when a grower identifies a particularly good specimen.

When the plant is cloned (or has keikis) all the resultant plants have the same cultivar name, showing that they are genetically identical to the original with that name.

When a plant is bread through seed it will not be genetically identical even if it's bread from two parents of the same cultivar. Therefore a seedling can't take the parents cultivar name.

So this is a hybrid called Zuma Aussies Delight and any plant which has the same hybrids or species as parents, will have that hybrid name. 'Zuma Beach' is the cultivar name which means yours is either the original 'Zuma Beach' or a clone/keiki of it.

Ben's is therefore the same hybrid with the same species or hybrids as it's parents, but it's parents could be different individuals to yours or they could even be the same individuals as the parents of yours (especially as both cultivars have the same Zuma portion of the name) but yours is from a different seedling produced from those parents.

That makes sense. Some of this stuff is difficult to make sense of. It seems, at times, that you start to understand some things and then "they" change it. I guess I am going to have to pay a little more attention. Thanks for the information, I enjoy learning.

Ben - you must know that these two cultivars were from the same cross. Otherwise, it would be impossible to determine if they were brother and sister. For example, someone could remake the grex with different parents and get a superb cultivar that merited an AOS award. In this example, although the grex was the same, the two cultivars would not be siblings.

Well... yes and no.

I'm pretty sure these are actually siblings since both cultivar names came from Zuma orchids.

However, even if I remade this cross today myself, as long as the parents were (Sweet Memory x venosa) for the sake of naming, they are brother and sisters to the ones made by Zuma years ago.

It doesn't work this way with real families, but it does when naming orchids.

Where you might be getting confused is if I used different cultivars of the parents. In the naming of plants, that isn't considered. In other words, I was using "brother and sister" figuratively.
