Thanks Jrodpad,
If it had been something that was caused by an unfortunate 'bumping', it's odd that it would be on one spike but not the other. There are another few buds to open on each spike yet (and they're still growing), so it'll be interesting to see if the pattern of 'notched spike' vs. 'un-notched spike' continues!
Happy growing everyone

Hi Izzie,
Hmm, I'm going to keep a close eye on how the flowers from each spike unfold to see if I can tell if they're opening differently. From what I've seen so far, I haven't noticed anything (and the notches are so weirdly symmetrical on each side), but I'm lucky that I'm able to work mostly from home for the next week before teaching starts at Uni again and I'm going to be so over-run with new students, I won't be able to spend much time with the chids! x

Hi, Help/ 'you can call me Bob'
Have you had it on subsequent flowerings? Like I said, this is my first with this plant (but, presumably it flowered before it came into my care)...

well, on the plant that had it, it had a few open flowers and the rest were small buds. all the buds that opened had it too. mine definitely wasn't mechanical damage. but that plant suddenly died so i couldnt tell you if it would happen again

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that
Hopefully, mine won't suffer the same fate!! I haven't lost one yet, but that's probably more luck than skill
