moving equestris into s/h
Ok I have a nice equestris that was mounted in a hanging basket lined with a coconut fiber liner and inside that was spagh and styrofoam chunks....It has been doing very well and in bloom since June constantly producing new roots and it has made one nice sized leaf and a second leaf is fair size and growing.
I have decided to move it if not into s/h at least into hydrotron as the old stem is fairly long and I dont think it will do well inside this winter mounted this way since I will not be able to spray it down nearly as well or often inside and water dripping will be a issue. It has grown down untill it decided to bend and start a return trip upward so it has a u shaped main stem with no leaves.
At the base of the bend where it started back upwards are several incredibly thick new roots about 1 inch maybe 2 inches long so that is not a issue.
I was actually thinking of simply attaching the basket to the edge of the new pot with the crook sitting about 1 inch under the hydrotron but would still have a issue spraying the basket down untill it grew roots long enough to hold it in place and allow me to cut off old roots that are on the old portion of the stem.
I finaly decided to take the plunge and cut the old coconut fiber away and remove the spagh and styrofoam so I could place older roots in the pot and cover with hydrotron but at a level higher than the s/h res by at least 3 inches to keep them from being to wet .I plan on keeping it dryer and not going full s/h untill new roots have had time to establish. I have from prior transitions to s/h by this method had execellnt results with roots adapting to wetter conditions even when just in a regular pot with normal drainage by simply increasing how often I water gradualy after a week or two of adjustment to let roots that may have been damaged heal.
All previous s/h has been with dens and catts though and even though I have read the posts about how well phals do in s/h was wondering if equestris do as well in s/h as hybrid phals do in general in s/h?
I just made the move today and can still do either simply hydrotron medium and a regular pot or the slow transistion over a few weeks to s/h like I normaly do.
What do you think. Thanks in advance for any input....
