Help Me Identify my Phal. Hybrid Male
Default Help Me Identify my Phal. Hybrid

Hi

I have bought this lovely orchid in Shanghai. The growers claims that it is the "official Orchid" for the Shanghai Expo. It cost me 400RMB (about USD 56.6) for the flower. It has unussually large flowers and leaves. Flowers on average is 12 cm in diameter. the leaf is 11 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length. The flower spike is unusually long and contains approximately 26 flowers when fully opened.

Could you please tell me what is the name of this phal. hybrid and what is its parent species? Does it need special hormone/fertilizer to get the extra long spike?
Thanks

For most phal hybrids it is not possible to determine the name and parents because there are so many that look identical. Do you have a way to contact the person or company/business that you purchased it from - they may know. You will need to do a little detective work where you live - did it have a tag that listed the company that was selling it or had raised it? The next step would be to ask the person/business you purchased it from where they got it - keep going backwards in its history till you find someone with the information. Without a doubt that is one FANTASTIC plant! Good luck and let us know if you find the name.

Wow, what a beautiful orchid! Without a tag, you'll probably never know for sure the type of phal you have, but congratulations--you have a fantastic phal, beautiful color and so huge!

If the grower says it is/was the "Official Orchid" for the expo then he should know the name. If not, could you track down information on the expo? The name must be in print somewhere.
It's a beauty! You shouldn't have to do anything different with it. Just tender, loving care. Of course, any plant grown under ideal conditions will show its best side. :0)

I went back to the flower shop and inquire more about this orchid. Apparently it is a clone of orchids that won competitionin Taiwan. the flower is also imported from taiwan. The flower is sold 400RMB because it does not grow a perfect spike. The Expo flowers have strict requirements. It must have more than 24 flowers with no flowers missing in between and must all face the same direction. The flower is said to be worth 2000RMB (over USD 280) per flower. and the sad thing is that they are going to throw it all away after three months....

I am now researching on taiwan's orchid producers to find out more about this orchid.

here is what I find on the official orchid for this event.....

Leong highlighted that Singapore has specially cultivated a new breed of orchid for the Shanghai World Expo, named "Singapore- Shanghai Symphony," which symbolizes the friendly development of Singapore-China ties. The orchids will be specially air-freight from Singapore to Shanghai to the pavilion.

so I assume it is named "Singapore- Shanghai Symphony,"

But with a little more reading I find that the official orchid is suppsed to be a den by this name

Dendrobium Singapore Shanghai Symphony
Dendrobium Singapore Shanghai Symphony (新沪交响曲) is an orchid hybrid exclusively
created to commemorate Singapore’s participation in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai
China. The striking jade and gold-hued hybrid is adorned with delicate parallel veins,
symbolising the beauty of Singapore and Shanghai and the two cities’ correspondent
transformation into vibrant global destinations. The resilient nature of the hybrid reflects
the strong bilateral relations between China and Singapore who will join together at the
World Expo 2010 Shanghai China to share our approaches to innovation and sustainable
development. It also underlines the Singapore Pavilion’s over-arching theme Urban
Symphony.

sorry to say but you got played just a little on the story about it .......But its beautiful

you are just not likley to id it But I gave it a shot....LOL

By the way who is the grower might be just a little bit cautious of his claims from now on.

I have checked more info. The shanghai symphony orchid is only in use in the singapore pavilion. It is the official flower in the singapore pavilion. I got my info on more than one flower shop in shanghai. Some of them seems to carry the left over or defective flowers used to supply the expo site. Yesterday i bought more rare hybrids of phals and also clueless about its name. Its annoying that none of the flower sold here has tags. Some of the seller don't even know how to grow orchids!

I think it might be Phal. Ming-Hsing Eagle 'Unimax Romance' CCM/AOS, AM/AOS.

Second Place TIOS '08

"Thirty large, flat flowers and five buds spaced perfectly along one 135-cm inflorescence borne on a 64-cm plant in a 30-cm pot; sepals and petals shell pink; lip rosy pink; substance average; texture matte."

Wow! thanks for the info. Mine had 28 flowers if i counted the buds and the flower that have already droped. I can't more info about this flower in regards to the status as the official expo flower. I guess i will have to see when i visit the expo site in a few days. At least the seller said some truth about the flower being imported from taiwan.

Now that i have confirmed its identity, i need to clone it. Any recomendation on how to clone this plant? It is important since this flower is very rare here and i need to have a back up plant as soon as possible.
