Phal 'Ember' 3/20/2010

On the first day of Spring this year, I had a flower open-- and it is a special one because it was given to me by my friend PR on the birth of my daughter Anna. Sadly, the original plant went downhill fast but PR got the plant from Logee's Nursery (google it) and their excellent customer service sent me a replacement plant (the original plant went into intensive care and I'm very happy to say its rebounding nicely). It is finally blooming for me for the first time. Usually when an orchid is named it has something to do with its lineage or the breeder but in this case, I'm hedging a bet that this plant is named 'Ember' because of the brilliant yellow/orange coloring near the center that, with a little imagination, reminds me of an ember, all bright and brilliant. The bloom is roughly 2 inches wide and waxy-- which hopefully means it'll be around for a looong time to come. The added bonus? It smells so delicious.

Alright.. I'm not around here very often but this orchid is Sublime! Un spécimen exceptionnel.
Do you mind taking a picture of the entire plant? Also, can you describe the scent for us? Do you have any informations about parentage, which might explain the color (STUNNING) or the scent? I'm being very picky now but this color is prize winning IMO!


Btw the end of the spike looks nicely crowded full bloom ahead!

I too am a fan of flowers that have that glowing center. I would love to find a Phal similar, do you know the parents?

The brilliant center reminds me of my Phal 'Ping Tung Gold', that also glows.

Thanks Izzy-- I didn't link because i didn't know what the policy is!

Regarding the parentage-- I really have no and haven't had the time to look it up if it is available online.

As for the scent... hmmm... sweet, floral smell-- but like sugar too...reminds me somewhat of honeysuckle.

And yes the spike is full of buds-- though the spike is short, which apparently is characteristic of this hybrid. I describe it more on my plant blog.

I'll do my best to get you more pics. But it'll likely have to wait for the weekend as my weeks are packed! Just enough time to stop and smell the orchid!

I did a quick search and found this-- no idea if this is "my" ember or not... check it out.

A terrific red cross, Phal. Ember, which is Mahalo 'Carmela Orchids' FCC/AOS X George Vasquez 'Eureka' FCC/AOS, was made simultaneously by two hybridizers. Both Zuma Canyon Orchids and J. Frank Hughes made the cross using the same parents, with Zuma being first to the RHS. There were many fantastic red clones from the cross. Several growers have had success breeding with Ember and the results are beginning to prove that it will be successful as a parent of more quality reds.
