Yes, it would work as long as there are drainage holes so the water drains through.

A few holes for air flow might help as well, especially if things stay wet in there. Neat idea.

You could do a whole series of orchids on something like that! Put ones that like higher light and less water in the top and gradually plant ones that like lower light and more water towards the bottom. Disease might be an issue though, so maybe just the one phal is a better idea.

Cool idea!

another good idea:

Cut the bamboo longitudinally in 2 or 4 parts (try to have the cuts going trough the holes where the plants will be planted in) and then tight them together with wires... This will help you to get the plants out of the bamboo when a change in the substrate is needed or when the plant has grown too large for the setu-up!

This wouls also work with plastic pipes, which would also have the advantage of not being degraded, and if transparent plastic is used, then also light would go to the roots (Phals like light on their roots!)

Substarte to be used: Sphagnum can be tricky! The less holes for air flow the wetter the sphag would stay, and also the quicker it will degrade... You would need to adjust your watering accordingly!

I would be worried about ventilation, unless your conditions are very dry. But it would look sooooo cool!

I have air plants mounted in bamboo. I cut holes out of the sides and drilled the center so any extra water can drain. I just set them in the hole and thats it.
