your opinion on these different phals

I want to add one more (ya right, like one can actually stop collecting orchids!!) phal to my collection, if you have raised either of these, can you tell me how different Phal. Amabilis (species) is from Phal Rong Guan Amah in terms of over all size of plant and flower size and count?

I have the Phal Rong Guan Amah & although I wanted a compact plant, its flowers are a bit small (but still nice) for my liking. I am planning on trying to sell it when I attend my next orchid meeting.

Amabilis has a very large flower count. The ones at the OSA show were all very floriferous and I was judging with Ken and he said they can give blooms than a Phal schilleriana(which is well known for flower count)

okay thanks for the info....do you know if the amabilis is easy to care for? is the ken you mentioned Ken G from Calgary?

I found my amabilis from home depot too

I jugded with Ken Lopetinsky...I think he really likes this species and recommended us to buy it or one of its hybrids for a white phal

I have about ... 15 or so amabilis on the bench. They are very good bloomers. Of course all the amabilis you see are line bred forever, I don't know how much they resemble the wild ones. I haven't noticed, nor would I expect, any difference in culture between these and your typical hybrid. Mine are supposedly tetraploid.

Plants are intermediate in size, very floriferous. I'd go with amabilis over a similar hybrid, myself.

I am sad to tell you that Ken Girard passed away about 2 months ago. He was an orchid judge and a professor of botany, and quite generous with his time. We will miss him...

Yes, I know Ken passed away in December of 06. I didn't know him really well, but I will miss him tremendously. We were members of the same orchid club and Ken could always be counted on to give information on orchid culture & joke around with the best of them.

My Phal. Amabilis is in bloom right now and it was great to see the bloom stem (16 in.) shorter this year than last year but has 12 blooms with a bloom size of approx 4 in. single leaf size of 9 inches. A bit compact, nahhh not really.
