I grow all my Phals mounted on cork bark and they do very well. So, yeah, they can be mounted. They grow on trees in the wild, so I don't see why they wouldn't be able to grow on a wooden slab.

The question would then be...

Why mount a Phal on something so pretty? It'll get messed up when you water the plant.

The mount should work fine. I'm not sure if you have the mount yet, or not...If it's the second one, that looks like it could be pretty realistic. If the surface on to which you're mounting is sanded smooth, you might want to sand it with course paper to give the roots a nice surface to attach to

good luck

The only thing that bothers me about that is how smooth it is. Orchids like to penetrate nooks and crannies. You might "distress" it a bit first.

Agreed on distressing it. Can you sandblast it?

???

What's the purpose of the wooden plaque underneath the cork bark?

Why not just use the cork bark? It's less work and it's just as beautiful, if not just naturally beautiful.

Is the plaque for the purposes of displaying the orchid on the wall much like a hunter displays his deer heads or moose heads as trophies?

if you put it that way then yes and there would be sufficient lighting. or like those natural wood clock things the plaue would be about that big.

I was thinking the following for my office. Taking one of those old golden thick picture frames and putting it on the wall with in the middle a mounted orchid on tree fern or whatever. I think it'll look quite nice, I'm just worried about stains etc from watering.
